Highway of Death
April 2004

This month we're doing things a little differently. The image you see here is to be the theme. The picture is entitled "Highway of Death" but don't let that distract you from making a tune inspired by the image itself. Broken machines, burning sand, tough times...all in a day's work for for us here at the Monthly Mission. So raise your blast shields and warm up your war machines, it's time to make another tune. Congrats to Analog Kid for submitting the winning pic for this months theme.

pretty literal interpretation of the pic. someone survives the initial blast only to wake and slowly realize the destruction and death all around him/her.

Post Apocalyptic Highway Gremlins

I decided to take the photo out of context - I've been in a foul mood lately, and fixating even more on the death and soul-crushing cruelty that's still going on over there would be bad for my head.
Instead, I imagined a post-nuclear winter tribe of nomadic mutants stumbling upon the wreckage of this once-thriving highway. They proceed to disassemble the rusting radioactive hulks for parts to keep their makeshift convoy of diesel burning vehicles running.
This piece was put together pretty hastily. I haven't had much free time lately, but I wanted to do something with a quirky metallic minimal techno feel. I used a pretty minimal setup, and what you hear is mostly just live takes all the way through. I think it came out pretty well, and it's completely different that anything I've done before.

I've run out of free time for this theme, so i'm going to just post what i have. The focus of the track was on the events leading up to the war.
The Vanishing

Chaos. Controlled chaos. If things seem like they're in order, it will in time all fall apart in the end. Controlled chaos is still chaos.

An attempt to convey a sense of an unseen, unstoppable, destuctive force smashing and tearing its way down the road.
The Vanishing Point

I guess visually if you can imagine a steadycam shot weaving in amoungst the carnage and debris then this, mood piece - rather than a tune, is what the image evoked for me....
... after I had shaken the image of Godzilla having just walked off screen.

I looked at that image, I wrote a track on my PX-7. I wanted to convey the desolate and the broken-ness that I saw in that picture. I also wanted to not suck.

This track's kinda dark and ambient. I tried to sort of give the feeling of standing in the middle of all of that debris and shit... I'm sure it would be rather isolating, and emotional. -Colin
