The Machine Singing
December 2005

This month's theme comes courtesy of BillyWa. your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to compose a piece using only the following vocal samples:
onetwothreefourfiveThe rules:
- All sounds in your piece must originate from these samples
- You do not need to make the samples recognizable - wavetable/granular madness and vocoding are acceptable and encouraged
- You do not need to use all of the samples
- Your piece should not exceed 5 minutes in length
Happy mangling!

Machine in da House

This one I had a lot of fun with! A cheesy house tune, for something a little different....
All sounds are derived from the original samples (of course).
Software used:
Live
Kontakt
Reason
various FX plugins
Hope you like it! Cheers,

This mission really got me out of my comfort zone. I've never done much with sampling outside of drum tracks, so this was a challenge. I built most of the drum sounds in Sound Forge and triggered them in battery 2. I used Linplug's excellent ChronoX 3 for the pulsing percussive bass track and the snare.
I wanted to put together a piece that didn't contain any recognizable material from the source samples. I did include a recognizable vocal sample about halfway through, it fit too well for me to leave it out =).
Silicon Spiderwebs

Nothing speeds up your heart beat like walking through spiderwebs in the dark. As you try to stop them from sticking to your face, all you can think about is getting away...

Most of the sounds is used as soundfonts and processed thru the Virus KB for effects. A short little track at 2:57 min.

My entry has a case of Multiple Personality disorder - it goes from dark to dance to dub, inside of five minutes.
It was created entirely inside of Ableton Live, using the Simpler and Impulse contraptions and a handful of VST plugins from SmartElectronix.
Percussion samples made using Cool Edit, from plosives and sibilants chopped out of the vocal samples.
A couple of tracks were run through outboard gear (a Peavy 1310 digital delay, Moogerfooger analog delay, and Roland RE-301 Chorus Echo - yessir, I love my echoes).
Disconnect!

Hello,
I finished my piece tonight. It's not too long and not too musical, but I don't have appropriate experience and equipment to work with samples :-)
Title: Disconnect!
Duration: 2:15
Played, processed and sequenced in free software:
- Vienna
- Audacity
- Kristal
- Granulab
Enjoy!
